Jungle Cruise Ride at Magic Kingdom Everything You Need to Know

jungle cruise ride

This iconic ride, known for its humor-filled journey through exotic landscapes, offers a unique blend of entertainment and exploration. One of the unique features of the Jungle Cruise is its use of special effects. As the boat travels through the rivers, it encounters various obstacles and challenges, such as a herd of stampeding elephants or a sudden rainstorm. These special effects add an element of excitement and surprise to the ride, making it a thrilling and immersive experience. While these alternate versions of the Jungle Cruise were being built around the world, the Disneyland original continued to be “plussed” over the years.

As you wait in line to enter the line, it’ll feel like you’re in a colonial outpost. You’ll pass artifacts, photos, and tools from the theme and period of the ride to get you in the right headspace. The ride is suitable for all ages and very accessible to those with disabilities.

Holiday Overlays

Since it opened in Disneyland Park in July of 1955, Jungle Cruise has become one of the most iconic attractions in Disney’s theme park catalogue. The story goes that when Walt planned Disneyland he originally wanted guests to be able to take a boat ride past real animals. That was deemed infeasible, and instead animatronic animals were used and the Jungle Cruise was born. Over about 12 minutes, guests are taken around the world past various scenes populated by the animals. The boat then passes a lost safari group that has been chased up a pole by an angry black rhinoceros and are now trapped and surrounded by spotted hyenas. The group then passes by a pair of Nile Crocodiles and another waterfall, Schweitzer Falls (which riders are told is named after Dr. Albert Falls), and heads past the remains of a plane crash.

Storyline

Disney has since announced that the Disneyland version of Jungle Cruise will reopen on July 16, 2021. The Magic Kingdom updates are progressing swiftly (with the Trader Sam Gift Shop scene described below now installed) and all changes will be completed this summer. The Jungle Cruise ride typically lasts about minutes, though this can vary slightly. It’s located in Adventureland at Magic Kingdom, a land designed to immerse guests in the mystique of the jungle, tropical islands, and the allure of piracy.

Throughout the 1960s and 70s, various new animals and show-scenes were added to the attraction. The biggest changes up to that point came in 1994, when the attraction was rerouted and shortened to make room for the then-upcoming Indiana Jones Adventure attraction. In addition, the ride (and the entirety of Adventureland) were rethemed to be set in the 1930s to tie into Indy. This was due partially to the cold French climate not being hospitable to water rides and partially because there were several knockoff Jungle Cruises already built at various French amusement parks.

The middle of the day will see the longest lines with sustained wait times of over 60 minutes. Nestled behind some Adventureland tikis, you’ll find it in Magic Kingdom across from Aladdin’s flying carpets. Jungle Cruise is a blast for children but is also enjoyed by the young-at-heart.

Following these mid-90s refurbishments, the Jungle Cruise continued to be one of Disney’s marquee attractions. As a testament to said importance, in 2013, both American versions of the attraction were given a holiday overlay and temporarily renamed The Jingle Cruise. However, a modern guest would be hard-pressed to recognize much of the attraction. There was no ad-libbed humor from the skippers, who played the entire experience straight. What I didn’t mention was that I got in line for Jungle Cruise around the time the Festival of Fantasy Parade had passed through Frontierland. Adventureland is partially blocked off when the parade begins, so fewer guests can enter the land.

Guide to Jungle Cruise at Magic Kingdom

This version shares a station building with the park's steam train ride, Western River Railroad. There are 12 vehicles, with a maximum of 9 in operation at any given time (8 with guests and 1 training vehicle). The boats in 1955 were painted as clean, idealized replicas, but have since been given a more realistic theming reflecting the grunge and wear of actual watercraft due to the addition of Indiana Jones Adventure and its ruggedness. The bigger surprise to me is not that Jungle Cruise changing, but that there’s an accompanying announcement from Disney. The Jungle Cruise attraction at Disney World has seen numerous updates and enhancements over the years, aiming to provide guests with an even more immersive and engaging experience. These updates have introduced new features and made significant changes to enhance cultural sensitivity, ensuring a ride that is both entertaining and respectful.

While the ride is quite cruisy, the fun of Jungle Cruise lies with the skipper. There is a script, but most skippers will bring their own flare to the show– keeping guests laughing and the energy high. The ride’s early renditions were more of an experience at first, like visiting a zoo or a botanic garden. However, over time the ride has developed into a funny, lighthearted attraction, and as a result, has increased in popularity. In Tokyo Disneyland, the station and surrounding area are themed to a more upscale African city, as opposed to an isolated jungle outpost.

You’ll want to pay attention while you walk around in the queue for this classic Disney ride. You’ll see all sorts of jokes built into the decor as well as puns you can tell your family back home. It’s a mock-up of an old radio show hosted by Albert Awol, and is plentiful in puns, jokes, and old-timey sound effects. If you’re visiting Magic Kingdom with small children, Jungle Cruise is a good option because it has no height requirement and animatronic animals. That said, we’d only prioritize Jungle Cruise if we had Genie+ or if we were primarily planning on doing family rides (i.e. not trying to do rider switch on all the coasters). The boats then depart and head down the river, past Tarzan's Treehouse, where the skipper tells guests to wave goodbye to the guests traversing the treehouse, for they will never see them again.

While the ride doesn’t have an interactive queue like many other attractions, there are plenty of sights and sounds to enjoy. Disney fans may remember in February 2020, a Jungle Cruise boat sank at Magic Kingdom leaving guests with some wet sneakers and a lot of laughs. No one was hurt, and the boat was rapidly repaired and returned to the convoy.

Due to the nature of this ride being open and on the water, the Skippers are very strict about this. As your tour boat approaches the dock again wait on your Skipper to give the word to gather all your belongings and disembark. You will ride in the tour boat with other groups, but your party will always be seated together next to — or at least near to one another. There is a pole to grab on to help stabilize your boarding process in addition to Cast Members who will assist guests as needed. The music in the queue is also fun, including listening to what the announcer has to say. The Standby Line for Jungle Cruise is typically the lowest first thing in the morning and at the end of the evening.

Influenced by the attraction just across the path, The Jungle Skipper Canteen, which opened in 2015, is a flavorful dive into exotic flavor adventures while also meeting the needs of the pickiest eaters. Christmas is another fun time to ride Jungle Cruise– or “Jingle Cruise”, as it’s called– as it gets a makeover for the season and a snowman attraction is added. Some riders report that the skippers tend to have more fun during sundown. The boat will bob some, and sea sickness is possible, but it is generally a pretty smooth ride.

A select number of boats are wheelchair accessible and have space for a single wheelchair. Before we get too far into it, make sure you check out our guide on the Best Rides at Magic Kingdom for information on every attraction and show at Magic Kingdom. The Jungle Cruise boats do run on a track, similar to the Liberty Belle and Mark Twain Riverboats.

As the plot developed, the trees became larger and lusher, only adding to the jungle feel. The attraction was such as hit in Southern California that another version was added to Disney’s Magic Kingdom theme park and was included on opening day at Walt Disney World on October 1, 1971. There is a FastPass queue for this Disney attraction at both U.S. parks. While Walt Disney World utilizes a digital advance FastPass+ system, Disneyland Resort still relies on both the paper FASTPASS system as well as the digital MaxPass system.

Moreover, there’s still no timeline set for the Splash Mountain reimagining, and rumors that the finished project could be years away. Jungle Cruise being announced much later but being finished much earlier suggests to me that perhaps the changes aren’t as substantive as implied. Then again, the tone and appearance of Jungle Cruise can be dramatically changed in a limited amount of time–just look what happens each year literally overnight for Christmas with Jingle Cruise! We’ll keep you posted on future developments with Jungle Cruise, and other attraction updates at both Walt Disney World and Disneyland. The other interesting aspect of this announcement is that Imagineering indicates the changes (presumably for both Disneyland and Walt Disney World) will be added to the attraction in 2021.
